Crime Prevention Advice
Top ten tips to avoid the summertime car crime blues
As the warm weather draws more and more people to the many
beauty spots in Hampshire and the Isle
of Wight, police have issued ten top tips to avoiding the car
crime summertime blues.
Barbara White, Crime Prevention Officer, said: "Vehicles are
often targeted when parked in more
isolated rural areas and those parked at beauty spots can be
particularly vulnerable, especially during
the summer months. Picnickers and walkers often leave their
vehicles unattended for long periods of
time in isolated locations, making it easier for thieves to
strike. We will do everything we can to prevent
your vehicle falling prey to thieves but as a motorist you
also have a very important role to play in
tackling car crime."
To reduce the risk of being a victim of car crime, motorists
are urged to take the following simple
precautions:
" Make sure the doors of your vehicle are locked and the
windows shut, no matter how hot the
weather.
" If possible, park your vehicle where there are people moving
about.
" Make sure it is parked in a location where it is in clear
view of other members of the public, not
obscured from sight and therefore more vulnerable.
" Check the area before leaving your vehicle. Is there anyone
suspicious waiting nearby in a car? If
so, wait a little to see what they do, and take a note of
their registration number.
" Wherever possible, do not leave anything in your vehicle,
including in the boot.
" Make sure you do not leave a jacket or coat behind when you
leave the vehicle. It may to you to
be of very little value, but a thief may think it has been
left in situ to hide a laptop or handbag and
break into your car to find out.
" If you have a removable music system, take it with you -
don't forget to take your CDs and tapes
as well.
" Remove all sat navs and remove the sticky marks that give
away the fact the sat nav may be in
the glove compartment
" Make sure you do not leave documents in your vehicle which
have your address on it - or you
could find not only your car but your home targeted by
thieves.
" When planning a trip to the countryside, make sure you only
take what you really need. That way
you won't have to leave anything in your vehicle.
Items most commonly stolen from vehicles include sat navs,
laptop computers, handbags and purses,
mobile phones and clothes. They are easy to remove quickly,
are easily concealed, and do not look outof-
place if a thief is seen walking away from a vehicle with
them. None of these items should ever be left
in a parked vehicle, whether in a rural location or anywhere
else.

Crime Prevention Advice
Garage and Shed Security
This is the time of year when our thoughts turn to hot summer
days and warm barmy evenings, enjoying
a drink on the patio and admiring the fruits of your
labours.
Garden crime is now becoming more and more common. Tools such
as lawn mowers, strimmers, hedge
cutters, power tools and bikes etc. are expensive items to
replace and may incur you extra insurance
premiums.
In addition if garden sheds and garages are left insecure and
garden tools are left lying in the garden,
especially after a busy weekend in the garden, this can be an
open invitation for thieves to use garden
implements to break into your house or car.
Therefore police in Eastleigh and Romsey are urging you and
your family to remember these simple tips.
" Replace all tools and garden equipment in locked sheds and
garages.
" Never leave a garage unlocked, especially if it has a
connecting door to the house.
" Ensure windows are fitted with locks and securely
fastened.
" Secure more expensive items e.g. mowers, bikes with a
padlock and chain within the shed or
garage.
" Mark all items with postcode and record serial
numbers.
" Take photographs of items such as statues and garden
furniture if they are unusual, for easy
identification at a later date.
" LAST but not LEAST repair damaged fencing, consider low
level lighting and keep your gate locked
with a padlock and hasp to prevent them from coming into your
garden in the first place.
Simple advice that does not have to cost you money, and may
prevent you from becoming the next
victim of crime!
REMEMBER KEEP IT SAFE, KEEP IT HIDDEN, KEEP IT
LOCKED.

Police release e-fit of man after suspicious incident
in West End, Southampton
Police are appealing for information about a man who appeared
to pretend he was a teenager in order to meet a young girl in West
End, Southampton.
A 13-year-old girl from Southampton had been using an online
chat room to talk to a boy who said he was 17 years old, and called
Mark Richards.
After speaking online for a while the boy said he lived in
Eastleigh, and suggested the pair should meet up. They arranged to
meet outside of the Two Brothers pub in Townhill Way, West End, at
2.30pm on May 25.
The girl went along to the meeting, and took her 20-year-old
brother with her. The man arrived and spoke briefly to the
girl.
The man ran away when the girl's brother introduced himself
and challenged the man.
The man is described as:
- White
- Around 30 years old
- Slim build
- Around 6ft 1ins tall
- Brown hair
- Brown eyes
- Tattoo on his upper right arm
- Wearing a light beige top and beige ¾ length trousers

PC Kerrie Malin said, "We are looking to identify this man as
soon as possible so that we can talk to him about what happened. If
you recognise him please get in contact.
"I would advise young people to be aware of the risks when
talking to people online in some cases the details people give out
about themselves are not correct. If you are at all suspicious then
it is important to tell someone about who you are talking to, not
to give out personal information about yourself, and do not agree
to meet them."
Anyone with any information about this incident should contact
PC Kerrie Malin at Eastleigh police station on 0845 045 45 45, or
call Crimestoppers, the charity, anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Appeal for information after youth is assaulted in
Botley
Police are appealing for information after a youth was hit
with a bottle during an event at Manor Farm Country Park in
Botley.
Between 10.30pm and 10.49pm on Friday, June 19, a 16-year-old
boy was approached from behind and hit on the head with a glass
bottle.
The incident occurred during an informal event where around
100 young people, all around the age of 16, had gathered to
celebrate the end of the school year. Many of those in attendance
were from Wildern School.
The injured youth suffered cuts and bruising to his head and
face, and was taken to Southampton General Hospital for
treatment.
The offender ran away immediately after the assault, and is
described as:
- White
- Average height
- Medium build
- Blond hair
- Wearing a grey hooded jumper
PC Stuart Tribbeck said, "This was a deliberate and vicious
assault that was unprovoked. Officers were in the area because this
was a planned event, and so we know there were many people around
at the time of this attack, and I would urge anyone who saw what
happened or who can help us identify the offender to get in
contact."
Anyone with any information in relation to this incident
should contact PC Stuart Tribbeck at Hedge End police station on
0845 045 45 45 or call Crimestoppers, the charity, anonymously on
0800 555 111.

Stolen stallion returned
A stallion stolen from a field at Tanhouse Lane, Hedge End
between 6.30pm Tuesday and 8.30am Wednesday, June 16 and 17, has
mysteriously returned.
Owners found the five-year-old bay stallion back to its field
late this morning, Thursday, June 18.
Police now want to hear from anyone who has information about
who was responsible for the taking the horse or has knowledge of
where it was kept during the period it was missing.
They would also like to hear from anyone who was in the area
of Hats Copse Park and Tanhouse Lane this morning who might have
seen someone walking with the horse or removing one from a
horsebox.
Anyone with information is asked to contact police at Hedge
End on 0845 045 45 45 or the anonymous Crimestoppers charity line
on 0800 555 111.

Police seek stallion stolen from Hedge
End
A stallion and the person or persons who stole it are being
sought by police at Hedge End.
The horse was taken between 6.30pm Tuesday and 8.30am
Wednesday, June 16 and 17, from a field at Tanhouse Lane, Hedge
End.
The thief cut and removed an eight-foot section of fence to
get into the field and is believed to have walked the horse out of
the field via Hats Copse Park.
The five-year-old bay stallion is 15½ hands with four
white feet and a small white blaze. He is not broken and is
extremely timid. It is believed the thief would have had
great difficulty getting the stallion into a horse box unless it
was sedated.
The stallion was one of seven horses in the field, and it
would have made a great deal of noise when separated from the other
animals.
Police want to hear from anyone who heard or saw unusual
activity in the area of Tanhouse Lane or Hats Copse Park overnight
Tuesday and Wednesday. They particularly want to hear from
anyone who saw a horsebox in that area.
Anyone with information is asked to contact police at Hedge
End on 0845 045 45 45 or the anonymous Crimestoppers charity line
on 0800 555 111.
