Appeal for information after youths throw stone off a bridge onto the M27

Police are appealing for information after a car was hit with a stone as the driver passed beneath a bridge on the M27 at Hedge End.

The incident occurred between 8.30am and 8.40am on Wednesday September 1.

The victim, a 46-year-old woman from New Milton, was driving east bound on the M27 when she saw two youths on the Botley Road bridge.

As she drove under the bridge, the youths threw a stone at her car causing the sunroof to smash.

PC Alex Hennessey said: "The actions of those responsible for this incident were extremely dangerous; the sunroof shattered and covered the victim in glass leaving her very shaken, but fortunately on this occasion no one was injured.

"However, this incident could have been much worse, what may have seemed like a fun game could have caused serious injury or even death. I cannot stress too strongly just how dangerous it is to throw objects from motorway bridges.

"I would like to hear from anyone who witnessed this incident, or who has any information about it.

"I would also appeal to parents to talk to their children about the consequences and potential dangers of this behaviour. Anyone caught throwing objects onto the motorway will be dealt with robustly."

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact PC Alex Hennessey at Eastleigh police station on 101. Alternatively you can call the Crimestoppers charity anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Crime Prevention Advice
Garages, Sheds and Outbuildings

Garden crime and theft from outbuildings is now becoming more and more common.  Tools such as lawn mowers, strimmers, hedge cutters, power tools and bikes etc. are expensive items to replace and may incur you extra insurance premiums.

In addition if garden sheds and garages are left insecure and garden tools are left lying in the garden, especially after a busy weekend in the garden, this can be an open invitation for thieves to use garden implements to break into your house or car.

Remember these simple pieces of advice.

Outbuildings should be secured and alarmed.
Never leave a garage unlocked, especially if it has a connecting door to the house.
Ensure windows are fitted with locks and securely fastened.
Secure more expensive items e.g. mowers, bikes with a padlock and chain within the shed, garage or outbuilding.
Replace all tools and garden equipment in locked sheds and garages.
Mark all items with postcode and record serial numbers.
Take photographs of items such as statues and garden furniture if they are unusual, for easy identification at a later date.
LAST but not LEAST repair damaged fencing, consider low level lighting and keep your gate locked with a padlock and hasp to prevent them from coming into your garden in the first place.

Simple advice that does not have to cost you money, and may prevent you from becoming the next victim of crime!

Fighting fuel thefts in Test Valley

Police in rural Test Valley are uniting with local farmers and members of the rural community to try and reduce fuel thefts in the area.

Working together with the Test Valley Farmwatch scheme, police officers are introducing a substance that can be used to 'chemically tag' fuel so that it can be traced back to its original owner.

They will be giving out free bottles of the substance to members of the rural community during September.

By adding just 100ml of the liquid to their tanks, farmers and other members of the rural community can protect their fuel and put thieves off from stealing it.

Stickers stating that the fuel has been tagged are also being given out with the substance to be displayed on the tanks and act as a deterrent to potential thieves.

Individuals living within the rural Test Valley can register to receive a free 100ml bottle of the substance at the Romsey Show on Saturday, September 11, where local police and Farm Watch representatives will have a stand. Alternatively, they can contact the Test Valley Crime Prevention Officer, Melody Manning, by calling 101, or 0845 045 45 45 from outside of Hampshire.

Fuel thefts continue to be a problem nationally. With the rising cost of fuel, thieves are continuing to target tanks at local farms, businesses, homes and inside vehicles.

Seven premises in Test Valley were targeted in August and police anticipate there may be more over the coming months as more people fill up their heating fuel tanks ready for the colder weather.

Last winter (2009-2010), Western Hampshire saw the number of fuel thefts quadruple from the number of such offences during the previous winter (2008 -2009). Local officers are hoping the use of this substance could go some way to ensure that doesn't happen again in the area this year.

PC Bill Williams, from the Andover Rural Safer Neighbourhoods team, said:

"Using this substance to mark fuel is a simple but very effective way of making it easily traceable and making it harder for thieves to re-sell. We will be working hard over the next few months to spread the message among the rural communities that this substance is available to them and that it will help us to deter and reduce this type of crime in our area."

Ruth Harper-Adams from Test Valley Farmwatch said:

"Fuel theft from farmyards not only has a costly impact, it also creates other huge implications, such as delays in farming operations, and may also create an environmental problem; where tank damage is a consequence."

Local farmer, Mark Glover, said:

"I think this is a great idea. With the rise in fuel thefts, we will definitely be tagging all of our fuel."

Appeal for witnesses after sheds damaged at Hedge End allotments

Police are appealing for information after 28 allotments in Hedge End were damaged overnight on Thursday August 19.

Shed doors were ripped off and smashed at the allotment gardens at Kanes Hill in Upper Northam Road.

PC Andrew Laverick said: "I would like to hear from anyone who has information about this incident. The allotments have become a very important part of the local community and those who occupy these allotments work extremely hard.

"I would also like to appeal for the allotment owners to contact the police so that we can record all of the damage caused and to remind them not to leave valuables in their sheds overnight."

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact PC Andrew Laverick at Hedge End police station on 101. Alternatively you can call the Crimestoppers charity anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Crime Prevention Advice

Since August 12 there have been a significant number of thefts of catalytic converters at a variety of locations across the borough. The areas mainly targeted are large busy car parks such as
Sainsburys/Marks and Spencer, Hedge End; Tesco's, Bursledon and Hamble School, Satchell Lane.
Vehicles being targeted are often those with a high kerb clearance like Ford Transit vans and other
similar sized vans.

Most of these offences occurred in busy car parks, so be aware of what would not normally look out of place, such as a recovery vehicle or mechanic apparently working on a vehicle.

Catalytic converters are the subject of theft for their scrap value and can be removed very quickly

Crime Prevention Advice

Security on the Beach/Camping
It goes without saying that with a bit of sunshine in this country the world and his wife are off to have fun and who can blame them.  But it is still essential that every precaution is taken to keep your property safe, don't spoil the fun by becoming another victim of crime.
When parking your vehicle ensure that you secure it properly before you leave it.

DON'T be tempted to leave windows open.
DON'T leave valuables in the car or property on show.
Use the recommended security devices.
DON'T park in secluded, out the way areas, but DO park with consideration to local residents, preferably in a "secured car park award" with CCTV.

When you are on the beach or camp site ensure you know where you property is at all times.

DON'T be tempted to leave it unattended under a towel or in an unattended tent, out of sight is not always out of mind.
Best advice is to take as little valuable property with you as possible - do you need to take all the contents of your wallet or handbag?
Ensure you have marked your property e.g. radios, mobiles etc. with your post code and door number for identification should you wish to take them with you.

If the unfortunate does happen ensure you report it straight away, cancel any cards and don't give out your pin number to anyone.

And should your house keys be stolen, remember you will need to change all the locks to your house which can be expensive.

REMEMBER PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE.

Crime Prevention Advice

Pedal Cycles
Most pedal cycle crime can be prevented by taking the following simple steps:
" Always lock your bicycle, even if you are only leaving it for a couple of minutes.
" Lock garages and sheds when leaving a bicycle in these buildings.
" Avoid leaving your bicycle in isolated and/or dimly-lit places leave it where a potential thief can easily be seen.
" Invest in a good bike lock. Hardened steel D-shaped locks are recommended as a minimum standard.
" Lock your bike to an immovable object use a bike rack or robust street furniture such as lamp posts or railings.
" Secure removable parts (e.g. wheels) or take smaller parts with you, such as lights and quick release saddles as these are vulnerable.
" Consider replacing the lever on quick release accessories with a security bolt.
" Mark the bicycle with a postcode and house number. This acts as a deterrent to theft and assists the
police in identifying recovered property.
" Register your bike at www.immobilise.com
" Keep a note of the bicycle frame number as this will aid identification should it be recovered.
" Store a digital photo of the bicycle, in a safe place; as such evidence could be key when property is recovered.

Police are appealing for witnesses after a 15-year-old boy was assaulted in Netley Abbey on Friday July 30.

The incident occurred between 9.30pm and 9.45pm at Netley Abbey Recreation Ground in Queens View.

Three men approached the victim in a large white panel van. Two of the man got out of the vehicle. One punched the victim and the other threatened him with a screwdriver.

The victim attended Southampton General Hospital to receive treatment for an injury to his eye following the assault.

PC Andrew Laverick said: "I would like to hear from anybody who has any knowledge of this incident.

"This was an unprovoked attack by three men who were much older than the victim. The assault has left the 15-year-old boy with a serious injury to his eye and he is extremely scared and frightened.

"Those responsible for this incident were travelling in a large white panel van. The registration plate began with NX03. I would like anyone who saw this van to contact the police."
